Mangalore, Apr 21: City corporation commissioner, Dr K N Vijay Prakash, raided a number of concerns located in Suratkal, and penalized shops found to be violating rules relating to plastic ban.  A total of 29 establishments were raided, and a penalty of Rs 4,250 was imposed on 17 concerns found to be using plastic bags having a thickness lesser than 40 microns during the raid.

The licence of a hotel functioning from the MUDA market building was impounded for lack of cleanliness and hygiene. The commissioner expressed his displeasure about the storage of outdated food items in the refrigerator of the said hotel. After observing that unauthorized cooking and storage of gas cylinders were taking place even the staircase of the hotel, he instructed the officials to impound the licence of the hotel. The licence will get cancelled, if the hotel fails to address the issues pointed out, to the satisfaction of the officials within a week.

Petty vendors and women selling fish at the fish market in Suratkal, who were found to be using banned plastic bags, were warned against the same. They were told that they will be fined if found repeating the same mistake during the next inspection. The commissioner told the news persons that the raids will continue to be conducted till the problem of use of banned plastic gets solved completely. 

When questioned by the people here, the commissioner promised to take remedial steps about the hygiene, repair of toilet and drainage system of MUDA market building here. Health officer of the city corporation, Dr Manjaiah Shetty, assistant health officer, Krishnappa Gowda, assistant revenue officer, Pravin, health inspector, Santosh, revenue inspector Shekhar, and some other officials accompanied the commissioner during the raid.
