Udupi, April 18: “In the past, the youth had scant opportunities to pursue their dreams of getting higher education. The families too found it hard to meet the aspirations of their children. Times have changed, and the present-day children have multifarious opportunities in front of them. The state government too has given added impetus to education. During the last five years, Karnataka has seen an educational revolution,” said state higher education minister, Dr V S Acharya.
He was speaking at a function organized at Hiriyadka on Sunday April 17, after inaugurating the new building of Hiriyadka government first grade college.
“The world is moving fast. The education sector of the state is moving even faster. From 151 colleges in 1956, we have reached 2,300 colleges now. In 1965, we had 635 high schools. As against this, we have over 13,000 high schools in the state now. The growth witnessed during the last some years in this sector has been phenomenal,” he added.
He said that Knowledge Commission and Higher Education Board were formed with the specific aim of improving quality of education. “We are adapting to changes depending on the recommendations of these bodies from time to time,” he said. He promised to release Rs 30 lac immediately for building four rooms in the college, and to release further sums totalling to a crore of rupees in stages.
MLA, Lalaji R Mendon, presided. Mangalore University vice cancellor, Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, unveiled the first annual magazine of the college, ‘Hiriya Siri’. MLA, K Raghupati Bhat, zilla panchayat president, Katapadi Shankar Poojary, taluk panchayat president, Devadas Hebbar, zilla panchayatr social justice standing committee chairman, Upendra Nayak, and others were present.
College principal, Padekallu Vishnu Bhat, welcomed. Students Forum convener, Udaya Shetty presented the programme. Lecturer, Vishweshwar Gaonkar, proposed the vote of thanks.
