Mangalore: Ayurveda Practitioner, Dr N V Upadhyaya, Passes Away

Mangalore, Apr 16: Dr Nandikoor Venkataramana (N V) Upadhyaya (103), a renowned and popular Ayurveda medical practitioner from the city, breathed his last at his residence at Karangalpady here on Friday April 15.

Upadhyaya, born at Nandikoor in Udupi district on July 12, 1908, had studied Sanskrit at Pavanje Jnanashakti Subrahmanya temple. He later completed his ‘Ayurveda Vidwan’ and LAMS degrees by studying in the government Ayurveda and Unani college. Initially he started practice at Ullal, before shifting to Car Street here, where he treated patients for the last over six decades.

He had served Karnataka Pradesh Ayurveda Mandal, All India Ayurveda Convention, Akhil Bharat Ayurveda Vidyapeetha, Karnataka Ayurveda Chikitsa Abhivriddhi Salaha Samiti, and Ayurveda Medical Council Registration Board. He had also emerged as an ardent cooperative activist, by serving in Karangalpady Sri Subrahmanya Cooperative Bank, South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank, Mangalore Taluk Land Development Bank etc in various capacities.

Dr Upadhyaya had also worked as the founder and monitoring committee member of Pavanje Lord Jnanashakti Subrahmanya temple. He was the founder secretary of Sri Subrahmanya Sabha Karangalpady and vice president of Dakshina Kannada district Dravida Brahmana Council. He had been honoured by various organizations, and had received different titles. Udupi Krishna Mutt had granted him the title of ‘senior medical scholar’ while Sanskrit Vidhwat Parishat Ayodhya had given him the title, ‘Ayurveda Ratna’, in 1954.

Dignitaries from different fields have mourned Upadhyaya’s death, and offered condolences to the bereaved family.
