Bantwal, Apr 9: With the arrest of a person based on suspicion, the local policemen have succeeded in unearthing 18 cases of thefts. The arrested thief has been identified as Abubakker (57), a native of Chikmagalur. The thief, better known as 'Itte Barpe Abubakker', who has divrced two wives, lives in a luxruious, leased accommodation with his third wife. He is called 'Itte Barpe' because these words were painted on an auto rickshaw he ran, and a two wheeler he uses.
The arrest was made from Vittal in the taluk. The police personnel also recovered gold ornaments worth about Rs 13 lac from him. Abubakker faces a total of 18 cases in Dakshina Kannada and some other districts, and warrants were issued by the courts relating to 15 of them.
The policemen acted on the information that theft plans were being hatched in a house in Kuddupadavu near Vittal. They visited the place and took Abubakker into custody. During intensive interrogation, Abubakker confessed to his crimes, it is gathered. The policemen also learnt that he was involved with a theft in a house in Punjalakatte on March 18 this year.
The policemen said that the accused told them that he was encouraged to steal by his wife, Latifa, to whom the ornaments stolen were being handed over. Investigations are on.
