Mangaluru: Elderly woman battling mental depression jumps into Nandini river, dies

Mangaluru, Aug 5: An elderly woman, who was under psychological depression, killed herself by jumping in to Nandini river at Pavanje of Haleangady.

The deceased is identified as Nursi (70), a resident of Lighthouse near Haleangady. The family members informed Mulki police that she was suffering from mental depression since a few months.

The mortal remains of Nursi were found on the banks of Nandini river near Hoigegudde under the limits of Padupanamboor on Thursday afternoon. Locals brought the matter to the notice of Manjula, president of Padupanamboor gram panchayat, who in turn informed the matter to Mulki police.

Nursi had tried to end her life on two earlier occasions also. Nursi, who slept in her room on Wednesday night, went missing on Thursday morning and her body was found in the afternoon.

    Now a days many youngsters don't get married or get divorced to run away from responsibilities & have Fun filled life!!! But as they grow old people distance themselves, including their own family & friends.. Hence slowly loneliness takes over them & they fall into depression !! There is no guarantee that having a life partner & children will keep people happy but youth should dare to take challenges..

    Yes....your last sentence speaks a lot of truth. I am seeing around, many children look after their until their parents write off the property to them. Afterwards nothing. In one of the Yesterday's article, Shri H. Almeida, mumbai written a beautiful comment regarding this. This news about a man who left his mother near the temple, by giving mobile without sim and blank sheet...saying it has his no.

    This is the daunting mental situation faced by many seniors these days... Polarisation and nuclearisation of families leave the elders in lurch... With little or no excitement in life many pull on with life... But few can not take it any further... RIP to the departed soul...

    Very sad. 😔 On Shanthi... Why proper medication for depression, is not found in this most advanced world of ours ?? We are landing on moon, mars, Jupiter and Pluto.. Can predict when rain comes and when cyclone arrives... But failed in this major problem..... . Mm

    Probably, she was unmarried or a widow without any issue; now, which relative would take close care of an old person unless she is very rich or having a big property in her name? BTW, a depressed person, who has attempted suicide once, should be closely monitored with timely intake of antidepressants as they are highly susceptible to repeat the same at some later time unless tended with love and care!!!
