Mangaluru, Jul 26: Many trees are cut in the name of development of the city. However, because of the efforts of Jeeth Milan Roche, environmentalist, some trees were shifted instead of cutting. Such trees, which were shifted last year have turned green now.
Roche says that he has got more than 50 huge trees of all types shifted instead of cutting. Nearly 50% of the trees that were shifted are alive and giving shade to public. But Jackfruit and mango trees could not be saved as per the information provided by Roche.
Some years ago, a huge Banyan tree was shifted from Mangaluru to Ullal and replanted at a cemetery there. Now that tree has grown further.
Because of tree committee members including environmentalist Dinesh Holla many trees were saved.
Now the group that includes government employees, lawyers, doctors, students and people of different fields is planting plants on Sundays. More than 100 member team does this work in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
NCEF secretary Shashidhar Shetty says, “Wild animals should get fruits in forest itself. So we give priority and plant mango, jackfruit, blueberry, cherry etc trees. More than 28000 trees are planted in the past five years.”
