Mangaluru, Jul 14: The Pavanje bridge near Haleangadi witnessed two bizarre acts of youths jumping into the river in separate incidents. While one died, the other was rescued by the fire service personnel.
In the first incident Rakesh Gowda (26), a native of Mandya and an employee of the post office in the court premise of the city, parked his two-wheeler on the bridge and kept all his things including mobile on it and jumped into the river.
He also sent a Whatsapp message to his relatives about his act, who immediately alerted the Mulki and Surathkal police.
The fire service personnel rushed to the spot and started searching for the body. The mortal remains were found in the evening. It was shifted to Mulki Karnad government hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to the relatives after the procedure.
The exact reason for the extreme step is not known.
As the Fire service personnel and police were searching for the body of Rakesh, a daily wage labourer also jumped into the river from the bridge but was saved by the fire service personnel.
He is identified as Dasharatha, a resident of Mulki and a native of Madhya Pradesh. It is said that he was suffering from depression.
