Kundapur, Jul 6: Farmers and likeminded villagers blocked national highway leading to Bannadi here on July 6 and staged protests urging to remove silt from lakes and providing relief from artificial floods during monsoon every year.
Shamsunder Nayari speaking on behalf of Horata Samithi said that several houses are inundated due to silt in the lakes and have spoiled crops. He urged to widen and increase the height of Koikooru, Giliar and Bannadi bridges. He said the elected representatives and officials have neglected their demands for the last several years.
Kundapur assistant commissioner Raju who arrived at the venue said that he had talks in the irrigation department about the issues and assured of removing weeds and removing silt from the lakes providing a permanent solution within a few days.
The protesters have warned of protests by more than 2,000 farmers blocking the highway in the future if their demands are not met.
