Maharashtra Eyes Power Self-Sufficiency in 2012

Mumbai, March 21 (IANS) Maharashtra will achieve self-sufficiency in power supply and will be free of load-shedding by December 2012, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said here Monday.

"Currently, the demand for power in the state is around 17,000 MW, while the supply is around 13,500 MW. We plan to add another 5,000 MW by 2013-15," Chavan informed the state legislative assembly.

While the state is expected to be free of load-shedding, the government is initiating several measures to increase power supply and cater to future energy requirements of the state, the chief minister said.

At present load-shedding in Maharashtra ranges from a couple of hours to nearly 12 hours a day in different regions in view of the power shortage.
