Mangaluru, June 24: Several villagers hit the streets protesting against the government and opposing its move to acquire 1,091 acres of agricultural land in Ulepady, Kollur and Bulkunje under Balkunje gram panchayat of Mulki taluk for setting up an industrial zone.
The protest was held under the banner of ' Boo Santrasthara Hitharakshana Samithi in Balkunje' here on Friday, June 24.
Addressing the protesters', retired teacher Nagabushan Rao said, " We will not give our agricultural land away for the purpose of industries. All villagers should take an oath to protect our land, water, and environment."
Father Gilbert D'Souza, Fr Micheal D Silva, Businessman Shamshudin Balkuna, former gram panchayat president Dinesh Putran Ikala, gram panchayat vice president Rajesh Shetty in their speeches opposed the officials' process of land accusation.
Boo Santrasthara Hitharakshana Samithi president Denis D'Souza, committee member Freeda Rodrigues, Dinkar Shetty and others were present.
Mulki Police inspector deployed a tight police force to avoid any kind of untoward incidents.
