Gas Line Damage Leaves Mumbai Commuters on Road

Mumbai, March 15 (IANS) Commuters in Mumbai had a hard time reaching their workplaces Tuesday as the supply of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the city was hit after a service pipeline was badly damaged.

The pipe damage near Wadala in south-central Mumbai Monday took most auto rickshaws and taxis running on CNG off the roads for the second consecutive day.

Those plying demanded exorbitant fares from passengers.

According to a Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) official, the CNG pipeline was damaged Monday by municipal labourers who were widening a lane.

"I have not been able to get gas since 11 a.m. yesterday (Monday)," a troubled auto rickshaw driver Janardan Kadam told IANS.

"There are long queues at all major gas stations and petrol pumps. Even if the supply is restored immediately, it will take me at least 8-10 hours to get the gas for my auto," he added.

However, a part of the service has been restored, according to an official.

The damage is being rectified and the supply of gas to the city has been restored to 60 percent of the total capacity, the official said.

"At present 60 MGL (Mahanagar Gas Limited) outlets out of a total of 150 have been restored and the rest will be restored in the next 3-4 hours," he added.
