'Slumdog' Star Loses Home in Fire

Mumbai, March 6, (Agencies): Grieving over the loss of her Oscar memorabilia, ''Slumdog Millionaire'' child actor Rubina Ali on Saturday said she lost all her good memories to a slum fire.

Rubina’s hut was burnt down in a massive fire that raged through Gareeb Nagar, a congested slum close to the suburban Bandra railway station in Mumbai, on Friday night. Over 2,000 homes were destroyed in the fire that raged through the night and was put out early Saturday morning.

“I lost all the books, wooden toys, photographs and awards that I received for the film,” she said in a choked voice. “I had kept all the newspaper clippings that reminded me of how I became famous after ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Now everything is gone,” she said.

Rubina, who was only eight when she played the part of young Latika in director Danny Boyle’s movie, was watching TV when she heard the commotion. “Soon, a neighbour came to alert us about the fire. We all rushed out after taking only the basic belongings. There was no time to take anything else,” said Rafique, Rubina’s father.

“I spent the entire night near the railway station with some people and have just returned to this spot. I don’t even know where the rest of my family members are,” Rubina said. Her family has been given a flat by the Jai Ho trust set up by Boyle.

“But it will still take us a month to move there,” Rafique said. “Had we moved in there earlier, we would not have had to see this day,” he lamented. Rafique mentioned that an official from Jai Ho trust telephoned him and asked him about the family’s well-being. “A lady called Neerja called me and asked me if my family and I are safe. The trust officials will visit us later,” he said.

Rafique, however took solace from the fact that nobody from his family was hurt and that everyone is safe. “But I am still sad that my daughter lost her most cherished mementos. She even lost all her expensive clothes that she wore for the Oscar award function,” he said.

Mr. Rakesh Sharma, Why are you bringing religion in between, and also why are you blaming on Congress. Being in Karnataka you may not be knowing much about Mumbai/Maharastra, for you kind info. Mumbai is ruled by Shiva Sena’s. Even though they are not politically in power they rule Mumbai city for decades. By the way who are Shiva Sena’s? No doubt they are the supporters of BJP. Shiva Sena’s are the people who stop most of the developments for their personal issues here in mumbai. Since they rule Mumbai on roudyism Congress party is helpless because if Congress take any step against their inviolacy, BJP is there to protect them. This has nothing to do with congress parties 60years rule the country, its only the mentality of the people and support of the BJP party for this kind of organization to get majority. And more over most of the people in slums would prefer to live in slum itself even thought are provided with a home or flat. If you read the above article properly the father of actress Rubina him self said they were given with a flat by the Jai Ho trust set up by Boyle. “Had we moved in there earlier, we would not have had to see this day,” Now who should blame whom?

Mr.Jacob, you are absolutely right.Everyone knows that India is land of promises.....from politicians to film stars everyone keep on making promises just to grab attention of media and general public.Such a good child artist still living in slum area??? shame on bollywood and our government.... But the brutal fact is, nothing happens hereafter & after somtime everyone forgets the incident (Like Adarsh scam) and those people remain homeless or another couple of 10 years.

I think those become homeless in above tragedy now has to run nook and corner of every goverment department establishing that proof, this proof, giving bribes... it is a long journey for them now...

This is the only way to get rid of slums? Awards don’t matters for those who lit fire. All this initiated by land lords against slum dwellers with support of ministers, most state govt. feels slum developing work belong to Christian missionaries. Don’t blame Hollywood or Bollywood????

Realy tragedy . The poor people of slum area suffers. Poor girl Rubina lost everything who became famous here in the movies as small child. but everything lost the sweet memories clothes etc.

There is a lesson here for everyone . This life is temporary, whatever material possesions will go away one day. So only the cherished memories and the good works what one do remains here. Let us pray for the poor families who lost their hard worked belongings also for Rubina's Family

It is very sad and tragic that about 2000 dwellings were devasted by the fire that raged in the slums of Mumbai. Was it accidental/caused by short circuit? May the Almighty God cosole the affected people. My sympathies go for them.
