Despite Petition, PM Mum on Goa Drug Mafia Nexus Probe: BJP

Panaji, March 4 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is silent on setting up a central probe in the police-politician-drug mafia nexus in Goa despite a petition to this effect, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopinath Munde alleged Friday.

"We had raised the issue with the prime minister. Arti-ji (Arti Mehra - the party's secretary in charge of Goa) had written a petition to him about it. But there has been no response from him," Munde, who is the BJP's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, told reporters.

Munde's comment comes weeks after Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told the media here that the union ministry of personnel, which functions under the prime minister, was sitting on the important decision to allow the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the police-politician-drug mafia nexus.

Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik's son has been linked by the international media and the opposition to the nexus.

Speaking to reporters Feb 18, Kamat had said that the union department of personnel and training (DoPT) was mum on the state government's demand for a CBI probe into the drug nexus.

"The chief secretary wrote to them (DoPT), but they have not responded. We will write a reminder again," Kamat had said.

Several police officers as well as two Israeli drug dealers were arrested and subsequently released after a Swedish model and a former girlfriend of a drug dealer had uploaded incriminating videos on popular video sharing website YouTube. The model, Lucky Farmhouse, had also said in an interview to an Israeli tabloid that Naik's son Roy had links with Atala.
