Mangaluru: 70-year-old Violet Pereira fights cops protesting road work, injures two

Mangaluru, May 24: It was high drama in Mannagudde Junction when an elderly woman obstructed road concrete work for nearly two hours by lying down in the middle of the road literally fighting the police force in Ward No 28 here on Tuesday, May 24.

The elderly woman is identified as Violet Pereira (70). Two police personnel have been injured in the incident.

The incident has been reported in Mannagude under the Barke police station limits. It is said that Violet went to the spot while concrete work was in progress and lay down in protest claiming that the land belonged to her.

It is said that the woman also asked the officials concerned to stop the work immediately and not to proceed with it any further.

The Barke police station women constables and officials rushed to the spot and tried to convince her to allow the road work. Though the officials requested her she was not ready to leave the spot. In a video that has gone viral, it is seen that the woman is engaged in a physical fight with the lady constables. Reportedly, when police tried to lift the woman to take her to the hospital, she bit the hands of two police personnel.

She also alleged that MCC is forcefully constructing a road on the land which belonged to her.

Had Mrs, Violet Pereira approached the Bajrang Dal , RSS , Benki Nalin pr VHP, at least they would have stalled this . The only mistake she did was approaching the usual savior of Catholic party. They slept over it as usual.

Lets not be naive and start abusing. I know Mrs Violet and the case. The MCC has served Mrs, Violet several notices. So its legal and amicably done. Only thing is , it took time. Mrs. Violet already had approached the famous opposition leader/s with the documents and they had assured to 'look into this matter'. Its been months and they are 'still looking'. The issue was forgotten and all assumed that the case was closed. The MCC usually takes a lot of time for action. So it came as a surprise. I wonder if the so called 'leaders' are still looking into this.

Where are the so called 'savior of minorities',? Where the leaders who come to our houses stating 'protectors of christianity' and beg for votes? Are they waiting to conduct a press conference? Will any of the usual internet karsevaks question??? Its very easy to come online and bash anyone with a fake id. Like some question here ,This is the harsh reality! Thats why nobody cares nor listen to us, because we have made ourselves irrelevant!. I sincerely hope and pray this elderly lady gets justice. Praise the Lord!

Hi lets not bring christianity or minority things here... Actually these pics are not very clear... People without knowing the actually story go on adding comments.. What happened there was a lane which has access to 3 houses there the people requested to corporation to put concrete.. N this lady stopped that work.. Corporation didn't acquire her property... Because she is old people show sympathy.. She is very rude and harsh.. We have personal experience and proof as well...

cannot come to final judgement here...It could be mistake from either side....In Mangalore city .i see lot of private property owners are encroaching roads which make MCC difficult to construct footpaths or broaden roads..even after getting compensation they act weird or bring new problems. this is the main problem why Mangalore roads are zig zag and curvy..only because of selfishness of private property owners.

The common man is suffering injustice with the administration turning a blind eye to their woes forcing citizens to fend for themselves. No wonder Violet was forced to turn VIOLENT. Otherwise, I am sure she is an honourable citizen. At least now let JUSTICE be done to her.

@Cynthia. I think she had exhausted all other means (except probably court) that is why she protested this way. The days are such that no one comes to help when required. The fight is solo. It is a desperate attempt to save her land which she has nurtured for, all her life. Also if a case is filed against her by authorities as she is a senior citizen she can get free legal aid.

Sir, yes...what you said is right. But, now under smart city, roads are widening ....land owners who are at the road side, should leave little of their land if it belongs to them for the said purpose in case, If they have built structure govt land or roadside they have to give up. Those who surrender their land, have to do so through MCC procedures and obtain a letter called "DAANA PATRA"....Because, where i stay here also, we left land to govt for the road and the road got widened....and nice. Its for public utility. Thousands of people use that road. Now, there should be a space in between the houses, through which fire brigade/trucks can pass. I think, there should be 16" ft width for a road. All these documents are necessary for a "single site" document which will be obtained from the mcc if you want to sell the plot. If we dont cooperate, there's difficulty in selling....Documents like .plotting/conversion/daana patra [ if you have given the land to the road, (either 1 cent or 2 or 3)/rtc..etc not sufficient IF theres no SINGLE SITE document ftom MCC in order to sell your plot. Even if you file case in the court, if you are not ready to surrender your roadside land, which will be used for public purposes, petitoner wont win the case...Therefore, i feel surrendering a little bit of our land for the developmental purposes, we dont loose anything.....This clarification not with regard to violet madam...Readers, dont atrack me

If there is a structure on government land, it is illegal, I agree with you. But if one "surrenders" legally owned land for a public good, adequate compensation should be given (at many places in Gujarat for bullet train project 3 -5 times MARKET-not guidance value was given). In these days of high inflation I do not believe in "Daan". After all, the compensation is not paid from the personal account of a government official or minister, it is OUR money returned to us.

As far as I know "Single site" is required for construction on land.If the lady has a house on the land and does not want to construct something new, she can sell the land with the building and it will depend on the buyer, if he uses the property as it stands, no single site permission will be required, but if the new buyer is interested in constructing a new building, single site permission will be required for getting the plan passed, anyway it the headache of the new buyer. I am open to corrections... Land is the subject of Government and construction on it is the subject of MCC.

What i am given to understand is....a buyer wont purchase land with bldg or plain land, without the documentation of "single site" from the seller.....Definitely, govt compensate according to the land value to the owner when it acquires many acres for its projects like drainges etc. People have got the same here... But, to widen the roads, which is used by the public or meant for public purposes, road side owners have to give little land ...and this is without compensation. Its good for all the houses if the road widens. Value increases...looks neat and clean tidy....Pipe line/water line/street lights accessible to all govt facilities...If the bldg is illegally built, during assessment of the tax, or property tax, it will be notified....As long as owner stays nothing....Suppose if he wants to build new structures/compound wall/to sell...etc. authorities wont give permission to carry out any work...What people donate land to the road, will be given a paper called daana patra. Daana is charity patra is letter....This letter is very important to the house owner. ..

There are many places where the land owners properties belongs to ruling party members or their supporters. This is nothing but bad administration. If you want to survive doing illegal ways, better to join ruling party. In my Bejai main road also MCC acquired our compound some areas and as well as others, but they have not touched a any portion of building where Bank of Baroda is situated. Front portion is on the footpath only.

mcc should not forcefully confiscate land belongs 2 private people. da govt., @ jail road is not providing land 4 extending road width, how can da private people can give da land 4 widening roads. I condemn mcc 4 arrogant on violet pereira.

Going to court is both costly and time consuming. The money spent would be more than the cost of land she lost, add to it the inconvenience and tension. The senior citizen is already 70 years old.Even after a gruesome murder and 5 long years what happened in the Baliga murder case."Kante ko kante se nikalna chahiye ".

She is aged.....Who has instigated her to protest this way ? Sleeping on the road, when the work is in progress ?? Do you think its good to protest this way ? See, its written, concreting was going on. That means, work started long back right ? The day they began the work her family members should have objected or put a stay....Yes, going to court etc costs so much. Now also, if MCC or police or concerned dept put case on her... fighting with them will cost double for her and that too at this age...! Forget court, there are organizations, church leaders, she should have approached and should have done in a decent way, by coming together with her relatives and friends. Do you agree, an elderly lady.. sleeping like this on the road asking for justice and ending up this way? Did the work stop? You know, how much ill this society speak about a lady and especially when a lady belonging to our community ?????? Voilet has a shop in front of the main road i think Sugarcane shop. MCC without taking her permission just trying to build concrete road? there is no notice nothing MCC acts like a Goonda. Today its her Land tomorrow anyone's Land can be taken forcefully by MCC. COncrete work should be stopped Immediately. Since she is old lady she cannot run behind the court case and MCC is taking advantage.

Very good Violet what is MCC doing only targeting minorities let the MCC broaden PM Rao road Hampankatta the hotel at one end of the road is using the footpath for its renovation and forcing pedestrians to use the road instead of the footpath, this happening since one and a half years. According to the Land Acquisition Act from Jan 2014, government cannot acquire land without consent and without compensation of atleast twice the MARKET VALUE ( not guidance value) .
