Mangaluru, May 18: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has imposed restrictions on construction of new buildings as a precautionary measure during the impending monsoon.
In an order issued by MCC commissioner Akshi Sridhar, the civic body has imposed a complete halt on construction activities of new buildings in the city due to heavy rainfall warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department.
Sridhar has requested builders not to begin construction activity of new buildings until the end of the monsoon season. The monsoon is expected to hit Kerala later this month and the order said no construction activity of new buildings will be allowed from the beginning of June.

The order has also restricted movement of soil. He said construction activity in low-lying areas should be restricted and ordered the building of protection walls in such areas failing which strict action would be taken.
The MCC has ordered precautionary measures to be taken to protect against landslides and land cave-ins due to heavy rainfall that may occur during monsoon. The order also states that there is a danger when pillars are erected using machinery during monsoon.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada of heavy rainfall during the next five days.
