Mangaluru, May 18: The omission of Brahmashree Narayana Guru from class 10 textbooks has triggered an outrage in the coastal districts.
Earlier, a chapter on Brahmashree Narayana Guru’s life history was printed in the class 10 social science textbook. Narayana Guru preached the doctrine of ‘One Caste One Religion’ and ‘One God for Man’ as part of his philosophy.
Various organisations in the coastal districts have condemned the omission of the chapter on Narayana Guru’s life history and Periyar’s portion in the textbooks. Periyar championed the cause of the downtrodden and had launched an agitation against the upper castes. The organisations have urged the government to rethink on the omission and include these portions like earlier in the textbooks.
Padmaraj R, treasurer of Kudroli Sri Gokarnatha Kshetra said it is condemnable to omit the life history chapter on Narayana Guru from the class 10 textbooks and also omit the portion on Periyar. He said both of them were social reformers and their message to society is of utmost importance.
