Udupi, May 13: “Tomato flu was found among more than 80 children below five years of age at Valayar, the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The flu is not detected in Udupi district. As the flu was reported in nearby Kerala state, the districts on the border should be alert,” stated deputy commissioner (DC) M Kurma Rao.
“As tomato shaped blisters are found on the body of children suffering from the flu, it is called Tomato flu. The flu spreads through viruses but it is not related to Covid virus. The symptoms of the flu resemble Chikungunya. It causes fever, blisters, cough, cold and dehydration. As it spreads from one person to the other, the infected children should get quarantined and the blisters should not be rubbed.”
“The district doctors and health officials should take suitable action if such cases are found. They should watch out for pilgrims and children arriving from Kerala. Tests are ordered in religious centres including Mookambika temple and tourist spots in the district. Private hospitals and all the paediatricians should conduct tests if Tomato flu symptoms are found and inform us.
People should not be anxious but should know the symptoms of Tomato flu, maintain hygiene and drink clean water to avoid dehydration,” he said.
