Mangaluru, Apr 23: Supreme Court judge S Abdul Nazeer on Saturday April 23 said there is a necessity for educational institutions to follow democratic principles.
Speaking as a chief guest the 40th convocation of Mangalore University here he said that education and democracy are closely related to each other as education plays a major role in building democracy as institutions are part of the society. “Democratic principles are built on values such as independence, equality, brotherhood, financial and social equality which are all qualities that are educational institutions to uphold democracy and build the institutions as well.
The judge who began his speech in Tulu saying 'Matharegella Namaskara' continued his speech in English.
Presiding over the function, Chancellor of Mangalore University and Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot said India which is celebrating 75th year of Independence this year has the need to carry along all its youngsters to build the nation.
Vice-chancellor of the University of Mangalore P S Yadapadithaya welcomed the gathering. Lecturers Dhananjaya Kumble and Preethi compered the programme.
In all, 192 students were awarded ranks. Hemavathi V Heggade was awarded the honorary PhD for social service, while former president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad Harikrishna and actor-director Devadas Kapikad were the other honorary doctorate awardees.
Anvith J Kumar, a visually impaired student, received the first rank certificate in political science at the convocation.
