Mangaluru, Apr 23: Accidents are increasing in the city, which is becoming more and more congested day by day. Most of the accidents are caused due to jumping of signals and using mobile phones while driving.
Under the limits of the city commissionerate, cases of driving or riding the vehicle through the red signal is rampant. This is more prevalent in signals at Hampankatta and PVS junction.
It is learnt that the collision between bike and bus, in which the bus was gutted, that occurred on April 8, occurred as the bus driver had jumped the red signal.

On Friday, April 8, at 2.23 pm in the signal at Hampankatta, a red signal was on for vehicles arriving from Jyoti Circle. Green signal was on for vehicles arriving from K S Rao Road and proceeding towards Falnir. However, the bus driver drove the vehicle when the red signal was on and hit the bike. The collision caused fire in the bus. Fortunately the bike rider escaped unhurt.
ACP traffic Nataraj says that vehicle drivers have to observe signals properly and should not invite danger for a minute or two of waiting time.
Usage of mobile phones while waiting for signals or while moving is also increasing in the city. The traffic police have to take strict action on this issue.
In city limits vehicles should not be driven above the speed limit of 20 to 30 km per hour. However, it is seen that many vehicle drivers drive at high speed. Traffic police are not showing any interest in curbing such violation of rule. Public are saying that traffic police are only busy checking vehicles for the wearing of helmets, emission test certificates, licences and RC of vehicles.
