Udupi: Two students drown at St Mary's Island near Malpe beach

Udupi, Apr 18: Two youths, students of GKVK Agricultural University in Bengaluru, who had come for a tour to St Mary’s Island near Malpe beach, drowned in the sea on Monday April 18. 

The two students who drowned are identified as Sathish M Nandihalli and Sathish S Kalyanshetty. 

The students of GKVK College had come for the tour. There were 68 students in the group.

The lifeguards at the spot instructed the students not to venture into the sea. The students did not heed the words and went to click selfie.

The body of Sathish (21) was fished out from the water. Search is on for the other student.

    I was there witnessing the incident. I know that the student were irresponsible and the guard did warn whistling to get off the cliff but post the tragic incident there was no support by the boat in charge. The students were pleading for medical help and taking whatever efforts they can to save the fellow friend. We tourist despite asking them for help or support with a boat to take him to hospital were falling onto deaf ears. They didn't even move a inch the 300 charge which they take is just to take the tourist to and fro and the emergency out there was not even bothered to address. The boatman out there watching the young student die and not even bothered to help. I wonder if the humanity still persist. They were like bola fir bhi gaye toh mar gaye..... We spoke to the police in charge hoping that they will look into the security and the government should truly take efforts of the tourist visiting the place and their safety. They need to make sure that proper safety measures are taken and then allow the tourist then watching people die in the attempt of making money from the tourist. The management of the St Marys Island sucked to the core.

    one more incident. Looks like no one is bothered to learn lesson from past incidents to take corrective measure to save innocent lives. Authorities should ban visits to the island until they have proper safety measures. Cant imagine what parents/ relatives are going through for these young kids. RIP

    I was the witness of this incident today 4 students trying to take selfie were washed away buy huge wave when they were standing on the rocks there were lifeguard but did not even try to attend to save life 2 swam back but out of 2 left out 1 was brought to shores by his friends and another drowned no attempt by useless lifeguard they came back just telling not to there and did nothing, one person ran back to boat and brought life jacket from another end, there is absolutely no effort to save them, no basic aid kit or oxygen or any other medical assistance and the boat or ferry guys did not even bother to take the unconsious guy back to Malpe they were just bothered about counting tickets they were as if someone had died so what . Sad thing they need to ban the island trip or have proper lifeguard with gear and medical assistance. Government named boating service just bothered about minting money in name of tourism. This news team is much faster than the so called lifeguard surprised to see this just hours after incidents probably if the lifeguard had proper equipment thay could have been saved. Waste management.

    Very tragic incident...no respect for life guards and law of land...so many young lives lost...hope better sense prevails...
