Sullia, Apr 11: Senior Civil judge Somashekhar sentenced both driver and owner of the tipper truck that killed four people of a family in an accident, which took place seven years ago at Kadepala of Sampaje to two years in prison and slapped a fine of Rs 3,000.
Tipper driver Ismail, resident of Beltangady, was transporting stolen sand that was stored near Adyar river bank, to Madikeri via Mysuru-Mani highway on February 18, 2015. The vehicle was owned by Mohammed Rafiq of Mangaluru.
Avinash Bhimaguli was travelling in his Maruti Alto car towards Sullia on the same day and time. Tipper driver Ismail was driving the truck at high speed. He crashed the tipper into the Maruti Alto car causing instant death of Avinash Bhimaguli and his father Laxminarayana Bhimaguli. Avinash’s mother Chennamma died on the way to the hospital, while his son Abhinandan died four days after the accident at a hospital in Mangaluru. Bhavya, who was in the car had received serious injuries to her head and face.
Tipper driver Ismail had escaped from the spot after the accident. The then SI of Sullia police station, Chandrashekhar, had submitted charge sheet to the court. Assistant public prosecutor Janardhan had argued for the prosecution.
