Mangaluru, Apr 10: Weekend turned tragic for a family out in Surathkal's NITK beach on Sunday, April 10.
In a heart-wrenching mishap that took place in the morning of Sunday, two paternal cousin sisters drowned in the sea.
The deceased are identified as Vaishnavi (21) and Trisha (17), residents of Shaktinagar. Vaishnavi’s father Venkatesh has been rescued. It is learnt that both the deceased were daughters of brothers.

The family of the deceased had gone to NITK beach in order to offer the ashes of Venkatesh's father- in-law who died recently.
After the ritual, it is said that Venkatesh was playing on the beach along with his daughter Vaishnavi and his brother’s daughter Trisha. A huge wave suddenly pulled all of them into the sea.
The rest of the family members immediately informed the matter to the police. Prashant, a home guard from Surathkal police station and another local youth, who were nearby, brought all the three to the shore and then shifted them to Mukka Srinivas hospital in the Hoysala van. However, Trisha and Vaishnavi died on the way. It is learnt that Venkatesh is recovering in the hospital.
Vaishnavi was studying engineering in one of the colleges in the city and Trisha was a student of Gurukula High school in Bengaluru.
A case in this connection is registered with the Surathkal police station.
