Complaints Filed against Yeddyurappa over Corruption Charges
Bangalore, Jan 22 (PTI): A day after Governor H R Bhardwaj gave his sanction, two private complaints were today filed in a city civil court against Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for his prosecution in alleged land scams.
The complaints were filed by advocates Siranjan Basha and K N Balaraj, on whose petitions Bhardwaj had late last night given his nod for prosecution in a development that intensified the political war between him and the state's ruling BJP.
The matter would come up before Additional City Civil Judge C Hipparagi on January 24.
Bhardwaj's sanction for prosecution has come under scathing attack from BJP which has described it as constitutionally 'improper' and 'politically motivated', protesting which a Karnataka bandh, sponsored by the ruling party, was enforced today.
The Governor, who rejected a January 19 cabinet resolution asking him to drop prosecution proceedings on the petition by the two lawyers, has defended his action saying he was entitled to act independently and not go by the council of ministers' advice.
The lawyers had filed the petition before Bhardwaj on December 28.
Yeddyurappa will not resign: BJP
New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS): Calling Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj ''an agent of the centre on a political agenda to destabilise the state government'', the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday declared that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will not resign.
BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here that the "democratically elected Yeddyurappa has every right to continue in the post".
Rudy said: "The rights of the people of Karnataka and their aspirations cannot be usurped by an agent of the centre".
He alleged that Bhardwaj was sent by the central government on a "political agenda to destabilise the BJP government in Karnataka and install a Congress government in that place".
Rudy recalled that Bhardwaj as union law minister earlier had "agreed to defreeze the accounts of the controversial Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi".
Rudy alleged that Bhardwaj had given permission for the prosecution of Yeddyurappa as "a tactics to divert attention from the corruption scandals engulfing the central government".
Bhardwaj Friday night granted permission for the prosecution of Yeddyurappa in the cases of corruption in allotment of land to his kin.
