Mangalore: Rousing Start for Three-day Beach Utsav

Mangalore, Jan 22: On Friday January 21, the three-day annual feature, ‘Beach Utsav’, being held as part of the ongoing Karavali Utsav, was inaugurated at Panambur beach here. City mayor, Rajani Dugganna, initiated the Utsav programmes, by flying a kite. She also inaugurated the Beach Volleyball tournament and food stalls set up at the beach.
Mangalore assistant commissioner, Prabhulinga Kavalikatti, said that all the preparations for the festival, as previously planned, have been completed, and that the general public will be given full opportunities to take part in the festival. Yatish Bykampady of Beach Utsav Committee, Old Bunder port officer, Capt Mohan Kudri, and others were present on the occasion.
The kites put on display by internationally renowned professional team of kite flyers, ‘Team India’, came in for lavish praise of the people. The kites displayed by them included those which depicted Yakshagana roles, Goddess Durga, Kathakkali artistes, etc. Sarvesh Rao of the team said that an exhibition of 25 kites with different designs will be held at the venue on Saturday January 22 evening.
The stall set up by the Union of Taluk Mahila Mandals, where traditional coastal delicacies were on offer, was visited by the city mayor. The union has put up the stall for the second year in succession, buoyed by the support it received last year.
Beach Volleyball, Throw ball, boat surfing in the sea etc, will be held on Saturday. On Sunday, skating, boat races and swimming competitions, sand art, dance performances by five finalist dance troupes, entertainment programme by Rajesh Krishnan and Chaitra troupe etc, will be held on Sunday.
