Mangalore: Journos Need to Assess Themselves - Justice Hegde at Media Manthan

Mangalore, Jan 21: The department of Mass Communication, St Aloysius College organized a two- day national level seminar on Media and Manipulation called ‘Media Manthan’ at Eric Mathias Hall of the college, here on Friday January 21.

Justice N Santhosh Hegde inaugurated the seminar symbolically through unveiling a TV and declared the seminar open. In his speech he said that the situation has arisen where the journalists have to assess themselves whether they are on the right path in safeguarding society. Calling media a strong and powerful voice to fight against corruption and dissimilarities, Hegde said media too has committed some mistakes in our nation. A strong and independent media is what we need today to fight against corruption, he added. Pointing out the recent development of political persons launching TV channels, Hegde said media succumbing to politics is very dangerous.

Throwing lights on political leaders owning TV channels he said there is a high risk for media to represent their own party’s view rather than being the independent voice of common people. He also said Media has done appreciable job by exposing the scams which occurred within the media segment. Humour should be a part and parcel of news, said Hegde.

Media Manthan is organized in association with  popular dailies Deccan Herald and Prajavani. Principal, Fr Swebert D’Silva, former BBC director and producer Adam Clapham, Kuvempu University’s professor Poornanand, Anilsu Verghese, and Fr Richard Rego, head of the department were present on the dais.
