Mangalore City Corporation Carries out Drive against Use of Plastic Bags

Mangalore, Jan 20: Under the guidance of commissioner K N Vijaya Prakash, environment officer Manjunath, assistant health officer Krishnappa Gowda, health inspectors Basavaraj and Babu Mallan, revenue officer Meghana among others on Thursday January 20 conducted a raid operation in the city to check out the use of plastic bags marked below 20 microns.

The team visited shops located at Gokul and central market areas. The team also found sale of black coloured plastic bags marked below 20 microns. The officers now plan to raid the factories in Bykampady where the bags are being manufactured. It will be carried out within six to ten days of time. The team also raided some of the hotels on receiving complaints that hygiene is not given priority at some hotels in the city.

The team also said owners of some vegetable shops located in the central market to remove their shop as waste vegetable was found being sold. Some particular customers would buy those rotten vegetable for lesser price and make use of it. There was also a complaint that those waste vegetables are sold to some hotels by Tamil women vegetable vendors.

Commissioner today insisted the officers to take strict action against all these disorders. The footpath vendors who have encroached the space illegally are also targeted by MCC.

    The whole exercise is really a nonsense. The officer is just going to small shops who are unable to defend themselves because they do not have the money or muscle power but earning their lively hood!!!. Does he or the other officers in the pic have the guts to go to shops owned by powerful politicians, business men who flout all the rules? if he does so he will they will be transferred to a desert where they will have no water to drink. then why this publicity exercise with the outdated obsolete walkie talkie in the hand!!!! isn't it just a publicity stunt!!! wake up people these officers have no real interest in development because if they have they will not survive in their posts. That is the sad state of India.

    Environment friendly bio degradeable plastic bags are already available in the city and are strongly being encouraged.As for jute bags,they are much more expensive and a large number of them would have to be consumed for the weekly shopping of an average family. So biodegradeable plastic is the most environment friendly and economical option....

    How come the enviornment officer did not notice the huge heep of GARBAGE DEPOSITED besides which is MORE...HAZARDOUS TO HUMAN LIFE, when he was walking thru, may be for more than a month which was not cleaned? what steps can these officers take when the MCC itself does not do its job punctually.

    It is we, the consumers should be aware and should not ask for plastic bags in the shops. Blaming others will not do anything. Take bag and then go for purchasing. This is the best way we can do for our Environment.

    In photo Nr.7, there is a lot of garbage. I wonder if he has first asked his garbage lifters guys regarding the garbage lying around. I never believe in these rounds, data is available with MCC much before the rounds. So guys next time you visit Gokul mkt dont expect any difference.

    This is a repeat "nataka" in karnataka. Every DC does this lip service and gives opportunity to MCC staff to "collect" fines (bribes). Next you can expect a huge advertisement next to MCC office regarding various microns of plastic bags (are plastic bags more than 20 microns non polluting?) wasting our tax money further.

    Plastic bags have become a popular packing option. They are here to stay. There is no running away from them. Better to accept this fact and find solutions to collect and dispose off these plastic bags.

    Among various solutions, one of them would be to have collection centers wherein those who care for the environment may be requested to deposit used plastic bags.

    This was being done efficiently during the "Plastic Hekkiko Andolan" by some honest citizens not long ago. This was abandoned once that DC got transferred.

    May be a biodegradable variety only should be allowed (whether less or more than 20 microns)

    Also plastic may be separated at garbage trucks & at dumps and recycled. The idle staff of MCC may be mobilised to collect plastic bags strewn all over the town. If some payment is fixed for waste plastic bags, it would be an incentive for all to collect.

    Let us move with the times and deal with the problem.

    Liquor is bad. Have we banned it? Automobiles are polluting (whatever Bharath 1 or 2 rating they may have). Have we banned Automobiles? Loud speakers & Crackers are causing unbearable sound pollution. Have we banned them? Get real man.

    the officials look like they are on a roll,hope this is consisant excercise hope not a photo op.but do not harrass the traders they are a back bone of the local economy,but educate them .also street vendors they should be issued licences otherwise how can the govt regulate and generate taxes for public works.our hotels really need to be looked into we all eat but the hygine part is missing ,also hotel employees should have health certificates.

    Its a every good move. Please extend to the other parts of Mangalore and make Mangalore PLASTIC FREE like in Goa. Please carry jute bags while going for shopping and paperless business activities. It is our duty to SAVE PLANET EARTH from further detoriation & climate change.

    Let the Commissioner first enqire why the roads in the city are not yet asphalted inspite of repeated assurances given by the Mayor which now seem to be totally false. He can go in search of plastic bags later. These characters seem to be taking the citizens for a royal ride. God help our city!!

    This is an excellent work by our commissioner. He also should visit our road, Warehouse Road in Kodialbail. The dust bin is missing for last three months and when ever we call the concerned officer in MCC they say it is under repair. The waste is trough on the road side, stray dogs spread these waste all over. Please do something Commissioner sir . . .
