Udupi, Feb 15: The government composite Urdu high school at Fakeeranakatte provided a forum for discussing the Hijab issue after a few girl students insisted on appearing for the examination with Hijabs on Tuesday February 15.
Almost 99 percent of the students of the school, located in Mallar village, Kaup taluk, are Muslims. Out of 22 girl students, eight urged the school authorities to allow them to appear for the examination without removing the Hijabs. The girls alternatively placed the veil of their uniform over their heads.
The headmaster and teachers insisted that HIjabs were not allowed as per the high court order. The school has a history of 165 years, and the teachers explained to the students about the legal sanctity of the high court order.
The eight girls who refused to remove the Hijab were initially denied the opportunity to appear for the examination. Later, they were allowed to write the examination with Hijabs.
The school is likely to witness another round of friction on this issue again on Wednesday.
Additional police have been deployed at the spot.
Shivamogga: Two students boycott exam after being told to remove Hijab
Meanwhile, in a school in Shivamogga, two students left their classes without attending their preparatory examinations as they were not allowed to wear Hijabs inside the classroom.
The taluk level preparatory examinations for the tenth standard students are going on in Karnataka Public School on B H Road here. Science examination was held in the morning. Two girls, one from the ninth standard and the other from the tenth standard, came to the school with Hijab and burqa. The teachers refused them permission to appear for the examination with these things on. Therefore the girl students opted to leave the school.
The preparatory examinations were held even on Monday. The teachers had instructed the girl students to remove their Hijabs and burqas. Some students obeyed the instructions while a few others said they prefer to appear for the examination with Hijabs on and opted not to appear for the examination if the teachers were insistent on removing them.
The teachers said that everyone is expected to obey the Karnataka high court order and told them that if they do not remove the Hijabs they must leave. The students said they will boycott the examinations rather than removing the Hijabs.
