Puttur, Feb 13: At a time, when even students are in hammer and tongs with each over Hijab and saffron shawl, the Hindus here displayed an exemplary act of communal harmony by pausing their Okuli procession in Uppinangady to allow the funeral procession of renowned cloth merchant of the city Hasanabba passing by the same way. The crowd immediately split to the two ends of the road and paid their last respects to Hasanabba.
The Okuli procession was in progress as a precursor to the car festival of Sri Laxmi Venkataramana temple in Uppinangady on February 11. The procession was accompanied by a band and trumpets. Renowned cloth merchant of Puttur, Haji Hasanabba had died on the night of Thursday, February 10.
His funeral was passing through the same street as that of the Hindu procession. As the crowd in the procession saw the funeral procession of Haji Hasanabba arriving, they immediately stopped the band and music, spraying of colours and showed respect to the late merchant.
In the midst of many misunderstandings that are prevailing in the coastal districts between Hindus and Muslims, many humane customs still remain intact and love towards one another is still alive.
Appreciation is pouring from several quarters over this noble gesture of the Sri Laxmi Venkataramana temple devotees when the communal scenario is volatile in the state.
