Udupi, Jan 31: As many as 71 faulty silencers were destroyed by the Udupi police on Monday, January 31. In a special drive conducted by the Manipal police station from January 1 to January 25, a total of 71 vehicle silencers which violated the Motor Vehicle Act were seized.
Speaking with the media, N Vishnuvardhan, Police Superintendent said, "Last year we had conducted a similar raid. After this we had received many complaints about usage of faulty silencers. People from many localities including doctors and apartment residents had complained about the usage of faulty silencers despite a ban. On the basis of this we immediately took action, seized the silencers and fined the motorists. This drive will continue. If we receive complaints from any other police station limits also, necessary action will be taken. In days to come we will also identify the faulty silencer manufacturers and the persons who are involved in fitting them locally. The drive will continue," he said.
Any silencer which crosses the limit of 80 decibels is identified as a faulty silencer. The 71 silencers seized were destroyed. A silencer costing around Rs 25,000 was also seized by Manipal police.
Manjunath, circle inspector, Manipal, Sudhakar S Naik, deputy commissioner, Udupi police and police personnel of Manipal station were present.
