Mangalore, Dec 10: Former union minister, B Janardan Poojary, said that Congress is the only political party that has the potential of leading the country on the basis of secular policies and principles. He called upon the party workers to work sincerely towards strengthening the party.

He was speaking after inaugurating a ceremony organized in the city on Thursday December 9 on the occasion of K Ashraf taking over as the new president of the city unit of the party.

“Our workers are the assets of the party. Young activists, who strenuously work for the welfare of the party, should be identified and honoured. At a time when the state government and its Chief Minister are involved with huge scams, there is a need to work to bring about a change. Our immediate goal is to make our candidates victorious in the coming zilla and taluk panchayat elections. People should be vigilant about the efforts of the BJP to win these elections by spending  money and misusing administrative machinery,” Poojary warned.

Immediate-past president, K Suresh Ballal, handed over charge of the party’s city unit, to former mayor and president-elect, K Ashraf, on the occasion.

MLAs, B Ramanath Rai, K Abhayachandra Jain, and U T Khader, former MP, Vinayakumar Sorake, K S Mohammed Masood, former MLA, Vijayakumar Shetty, and a number of other leaders were present.

District unit vice president, Ivan D’Souza, delivered introductory address. Former city mayor, Shashidhar Hegde, presented the programme. Veteran Congress activists, C V Shenoy and Yousuf Khader, besides Suresh Ballal, were felicitated on the occasion.
