Beltangady, Dec 10: In two separate operations, the policemen from the city saved 32 heads of cattle from imminent slaughter. During their raid on cattle slaughter centre, the policemen recovered freshly prepared beef, and the cattle tethered near a house, which had been brought there for being slaughtered. A vehicle was confiscated, and eight persons were arrested by them. Equipments used for slaughter were also recovered. The policemen have put the total value of assets seized at Rs 3.3 lac.
Anwar (38) from Puttukere in Kuvettu villages, Bavu (38), Moinu Kunhi (40), Hasanabba (40), as well as Iqbal (28) from Kuvettu village, were arrested in connection with cow slaughter. Moolemane Mohammed (32) from Ira village, Abdul Latif (22) and Mohammed Sohail (19) from Noojibail in Kolnad village were arrested on the allegation of transporting cattle illegally.
The cattle slaughter centre had been functioning in Pottukere on the deviation road from Guruvayanakere-Udupi Road towards Venur and Naravi, since some time. On the basis of reliable information, the policemen raided the centre being run in a house, where they found freshly slaughtered cows and buffalos. The policemen said that Monu from Guruvayanakere was the main operator of this racket, and that he escaped from being arrested. They have expressed confidence of nabbing him soon.
In another incident, five buffalos being transported in Bolero pick-up vehicle, being taken towards Kerala from Kajoor, were rescued. The accused are from Bantwal.
The arrested people were produced in the court on Thursday.
