Mumbai, Jan 2: City welcomed the New year with the good news of lowering of latest Covid infections. Compared to the 40 to 50 percent rise that was reported in the last week of December, only a 14 percent rise was reported on the first day of New year.
In total 6186 new cases were recorded on Saturday. On new year’s day 47978 tests were conducted in the city. The total for the state was 1.2 lac for both Friday and Saturday.
Dr Pradeep Vyas, additional health secretary of the state had issued the warning of the beginning of Third-wave on Friday based on the continuous rise in cases for the past 10 days.
The fatality rate, however, is low with only seven deaths in the state with only one in the city. 389 patients were hospitalized according to BMC commissioner Suresh Kakani.
The pattern of Omicron infections need to be studied for another two weeks says Kakani. At present there are more number of asymptomatic cases.
According to Dr Prince Surana of Chembur hospital only 23 patients were admitted with mild infection. They were taken in only as precaution.
The Omicron variant is known to be highly contagious compared to the earlier versions of the Covid virus.
