Kasargod, Dec 3: Congress leader and former Kasargod Lok Sabha member M Rama Rai passed away on Thursday December 2 at AJ Hospital in Mangalore after a prolonged illness, party sources said.
Rai (82) is survived by wife Umavathi Rai and four children, including son Subbaiah Rai, who is the secretary of Kasargod District Congress Committee.
Rai, who hailed from Ichlampady village, represented Kasargod in the Lok Sabha during 1984-89.
Born to Ariadka Subbaya Rai and Ichlampady Shanthamma Rai in 1932 at Ujampady in Delampady in Kasargod, Rai pursued his education at Government School at Kumbla, and later at St Aloysius College, Mangalore and Pachappas College, Chennai.
His interests were varied, from agriculture, social service, politics to cultural activites and so on.
He served as the vice-president of the Cannanore DCC from 1965 to 1980, and as its president for 18 years.
He was also the vice-president of the Kerala state Karshaka Congress for 7 years, apart from serving as the member of All-India Congress Comittee (I) and as executive commitee member of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.
