Udupi, Dec 2: SEZ is attractive as far as economic progress is concerned, but when it comes to sovereignity and constitutional provisions it might pose a challenge, said professor Jogan Shanker.
He was speaking at the two-day symposium held on Socio-economic repercusiions of SEZ at the First Grade College, Tenkanidiyoor here, recently.
Jogan said, "If we allow SEZs to acquire land as it requires, it may lead to hampering of the unity and wholeness of the nation." He also discussed the problems that may occur if an agricultural land is converted into the land required for SEZs.
Stating that it was not possible to bring the china model of SEZ to India, he expressed concern that SEZ does not boost the equillibrium of society, but would boost violent environment, which one needs to be careful about, he said.
Mangalore University economics department head P A Rego was the chief guest at the valedictory ceremony. Professor G Yoganand presided.
Dr Gopalakrisna gaonkar co-ordinated the symposium, while Dr Duggappa Kajekar was the organizing secretary.
