Mangalore, Dec 2: The officials of the regional director (environment) found to their dismay on Wednesday December 1, that a tipper truck was trying to dump fly ash at Tannirbavi beach, which comes under Coastal Regulatory Zone. It is learnt that the tipper was carrying a load of fly ash generated at Rajashri Industeis in Bykampady here.
The officials in the department of environment said that the above industry is involved with manufacture of vegetable oil, and that its boilers were fired by rice husk. They said that the industries have been given specific instructions and spots for discharging their waste products. They pointed out that the industries, as well as the contractors to whom the work of disposing off waste is entrusted, fail to stick to the instructions meant to stop pollution. They added that it has been found difficult to put an end to the unlawful activities of these vehicles, as they normally operate during late nights. Dumping of ash and other waste products in public places is hazardous, they noted.
The office has informed Karnataka State Pollution Control Board about the incident, besides serving a notice on the industry concerned, it is learnt.
