Mangaluru, Dec 8: As compared to other cities in the country, air quality has remained at a good level in Mangaluru. The quality has been maintained steadily. Even during Diwali festival, pollution was not excessive, as per the statistics put together by the pollution control board.
About a month back, dusty air was witnessed in a few areas in the city outskirts. It remained so for a week but because of the rainfall that was experienced thereafter, the environment is clear. It may be recalled that dusty weather was also experienced last week. Officials say that there is no worry about the climate now, as there is greenery in the city and more plants are being planted wherever possible to keep the environment cleaner.

The particular matter of dust particles here is 30 micrograms/cubic metre in 2.5 days. Sulphur is 10 micrograms/cubic metre, carbon dioxide is 1 microgram/cubic metre. Ammonia is 54 microgram/cubic metre. Ozone is measured at 20 during the day and more during nights. These figures are not worrisome. The quantity is a little more in Baikampady and Suratkal where because of their proximity to industries. The industries too, keep a track on the pollutants with the help of machinery.
The Smart City Project has installed measuring machines at five places in the city to keep a tab on the quality of air. They are located in the corporation building at Lalbagh, town hall, Hampankatta, near Ambedkar circle, block education office, Bolar, and near Crescent school Bunder. People can also access the date through OneTouch Mangaluru app. The Pollution Control Board gets figures directly through the command and control centre.
