Mangalore: Fr Augustus Muller Fondly Remembered on His Death Centenary

Mangalore, Nov 1: Father Muller Charitable Institutions celebrated the death centenary (1910-2010) of its founder Fr Augustus Muller, SJ on Monday Nov 1.
 
On the occasion, the newly built hi-tech laundry at Father Mullers was inaugurated and the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new building for Father Muller College of Nursing was held. The Father Muller Museum was also inaugurated on the occasion.
 
Seemanth Kumar Singh, IPS, city commissioner of police,  was the Chief Guest. Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore and chairman of FMCI presided.

Addressing the gathering Seemanth Kumar Singh, said that Fr Muller who was a homeopathic doctor never commercialised his profession. He served the society without expecting anything in return, he added.

Seemanth also called upon the students to follow the ideals of Fr Augustus Muller. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza in his presidential address said that the spirit of Fr Muller spreads the messages of Christ through love, care and service. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director FMCI, Fr Denis D'Sa, administrator, FMMC, Richard Coelho, administrator, FMMCH, Fr Vincent Saldanha, Dr J P Alva, Dean, FMMC, Dr Sanjeeva Rai, Head, medical sciences, FMMC and Sr Jacinta D’Souza, prinicipal, nursing college among others were present.

Sr Jacintha Principal of Nursing College proposed the vote of thanks.

    From the very early part of my
    life, Fr. Muller's name was very
    familiar because my father was
    an Homepathic Doctor and he had
    several books written by Fr. Muller,
    especially in the 12 tissue salt.

    Perhaps, he can be called the father of Homepathy in India.
    His contributions for Homepathy
    medical system , and how he was
    used by God to start several
    medical institutions in India is higly
    inspiring to read.
    Ordinary people who are totally
    dedicated for a great cause can be
    used by God to be the foundation
    stone of establishing greater
    institutions to bless the future
    generations. Best wishes and
    prayers at the centenary celebrations of that great soul
    who has blessed India.

    It is always a pleasure for me to be associated with Father Muller's Institutions. Here is an individual who came all the way from Europe to sow the seed of patient care in The Port City of Mangalore. His name has gone down in history as the pioneer of Homeopathy system of medications.His belief in the Homeopathy geared him into commencing to administer these medicines to the poor patients in Mangalore. As the legend goes - he sometimes treated physiological cases by simply giving them sugar coated pills which they swallowed and returned to him the next day fully cured. Such was the faith in this man of God. I am happy that over the years he is praises and honored. I was present this morning at Mass when he was fondly remembered. Due to other engagements I was not able to attend the functions on 1st. and 2ND. November but indeed remembered The Father of Homeopathy in Mangalore and perhaps in India. For the services rendered by this great man he was awarded the Kaiser Hind Medal by The then British Government which father Muller richly deserved.

    May his soul rest in peace.

    The name of Fr.Augustus Muller is well engraved in our hearts and in our minds throughout our humble family. My humble father was always proud of Fr. Muller and the noble Institution that he left behind in Mangalore that is shining so well under the able guidance of the Bishop and all the able priests and nuns. Our family has more than hundred years of combined service and dedication for Fr. Mullers Institution, and we shall always remain grateful to this noble place that has given us the identity and dignity of labor.
    While we are always proud of Mangalore, we shall always remain indebted to Fr. Mullers for the daily bread and the daily blessings that we were privileged thru the hard work and dedication of our departed father at Fr. Mullers and so also from our brothers and sisters. We shall always preserve the name and memory of Fr.Mullers so that we remain ever attached to Kankanady and Mangalore, the place that myself and my wife were born, and so also our first son who is an exemplary gift of Fr.Mullers. When there was no place available at Fr.Mullers maternity, my dear wife wholeheartedly agreed to stay in the General Ward of Maternity in the year 1967 because she wanted our first son to be born at Fr.Mullers hospital. She even insisted that she has the diet of the General Ward while she was there, and these are the virtues that have given us the pride and glory of life of Mangalore. Long live Fr.Mullers and may the people of Mangalore remain healthy and happy.
