Udupi, Nov 1: Perody Shivaji Shetty (80), a city-based veteran criminal lawyer and notary, breathed his last on Sunday October 31, due to cardiac arrest. He is survived by wife, Jayanti, brothers, retired judge of the High Court, Justice P Vishwanath Shetty and Shimoga-based physician, Dr P Vishwanath Shetty and sisters, Shashikala Adapa and Anasuya Hegde.
Shetty, who had exhibited leadership qualities since a young age, had functioned as the secretary of the students union in St Aloysius College Mangalore and sports secretary while studying in a law college in Belgaum. He was widely respected for his in-depth knowledge about all the spheres of law and ethical values he cherished. He also was working as legal advisor for Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank, Corporation Bank and Vijaya Bank. He had worked as part time lecturer in MGM College and Vaikuntha Baliga Law College here, and was known for his methodical arguments and oratory skills.
Shetty had worked twice as the president of the local Bar Council, and guided a number of junior lawyers. He was identified with the Congress party, and had been in the forefront of several people-friendly projects. He had worked as the secretary and member of Admar Mutt hostel for about 50 years. During the period 1988-89, he had worked as the governor of Rotary District 318. He had headed Shirva Vidyavardhaka Sangha, trustee of a few Daivastana renovation committees, president of Vijaya Cooperative Bank and secretary of Adarsh Consumers Cooperative Society.
Union minister, Veerappa Moily, district in-charge minister, Dr V S Acharya, and a number of dignitaries rushed to the residence of the late Shetty immediately after coming to know about his demise, to pay their last respects to him. Funeral was conducted at Beedinagudde graveyard in the city later in the day.
