Ajman, Oct 21: A team of delegates from Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) headed by Professor Innocent Achanya Otobo Ujah, director general, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) visited the Gulf Medical University and GMC Hospital, Ajman, UAE from Saturday October 16 to Monday October 18 to assert and recognize Gulf Medical University programmes in Nigeria.
The other members of the visiting delegation were Dr Abdulmumini A Ibrahim, registrar and chief executive officer, MDCN, Dr Haruna Yusuph, assistant provost, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Nigeria and Dr Iregbu Chukwuemeka Kenneth, senior lecturer/ consultant clinical microbiologist/parasitologist from National Hospital, Abuja, Nigeria.
The visiting delegation was accorded a warm welcome by the founder president of Gulf Medical University Thumbay Moideen, provost Prof Gita Ashok Raj, various deans and the Nigerian medical students.
The visiting delegation was briefed to an audio-visual presentation followed by a visit to various medical faculties and departments. They were briefed about the educational pattern and the most modern and advanced laboratories the University uses to impart quality medical education to the students. The visiting team was highly impressed that the university had an international faculty and a student cohort from around 50 countries. Later, the visiting team interacted with the Nigerian students enrolled in the Gulf Medical University.
The visiting delegation from MDCN commented, “While interacting with the students we have looked at the modern facilities and the exceptional teaching arrangements at Gulf Medical University and GMC Hospital and feel extremely satisfied with the professional set up and strongly recommend to the Nigerian Council to recognize and approve the medical training of students at Gulf Medical University. We encourage other private individuals in Nigeria especially to take a cue from the excellent philanthropy of the president of Gulf Medical University”.
They praised the farsighted vision of the president of Gulf Medical University and hoped that his noble gesture would pave a way to support the Federal Government of Nigeria to recognize and train more medical doctors and health professionals to cater to the health needs of Nigeria.
Professor Innocent Achanya Otobo Ujah, director general, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) agreed, “This is a real center of excellence and we look forward with a zeal for Gulf Medical University to establish its branch campus in Nigeria”.
Dr Abdulmumini A Ibrahim, registrar and CEO of MDCN also added that the delegation was more than satisfied from what they have seen and experienced at Gulf Medical University and GMC Hospital Ajman.
