Panaji, Sep 30: Earlier this month, an incident took place in Old Goa where, Joseph Dias a 54 year old man died on September 20, from a brain hemorrhage after he was assaulted in a supermarket over an argument for jumping the queue. Gajanan Pawar is said to be the assailant, but he is untraceable.
The incident happened when Joseph and his wife Caroline had gone shopping at the mart. While Joseph was in the queue to pay his bills, Caroline waited at another counter which was unmanned for Joseph to complete the transaction. But looking at the rush, the supermarket staff decided to open the unmanned counter as well, Caroline was first in line when the counter opened, but she was shoved aside by Gajanan Pawar, who rushed from his spot and took her place.
Seeing this, Caroline and few other customers objected Pawar's actions, and Joseph came to defend his wife. The FIR mentioned that Pawar got abusive and used foul language against the couple.
The FIR mentioned that when Joseph Dias and his wife headed towards the parking lot, Gajanan Pawar is said to have allegedly followed them. Pawar struck Joseph on the head, which caused him to lose balance and fall on the concrete, causing serious injuries.
Joseph was taken to Goa Medical College for treatment, he fought for his life for 17 days. His family said that the postmortem report states that the death occurred due to blunt force damage to the head.
Going by Pawar's phone location which is being tracked the police say that he has fled to Kolkata.
Along with CCTV footage from the crime scene the police have also recorded statements from eyewitnesses. A family member of Joseph Dias said, "The complaint has been registered by the police under section 325 (voluntarily causing grievous injuries) which is a bailable offence, and allowed the accused to be released. Pawar should have been booked under section 307, which is attempt to murder. Gajanan Pawar roams free since there is no will from the police to arrest him."
Police inspector Dattaram Raut, who is handling the case said, the case is under investigation.
