Mangaluru, Sep 21: A complaint of cheating was registered in Bunder police station here. It is said that fake documents about a flat located on K S Rao Road here were created and a lady was cheated to the extent of five lac rupees on that basis.
A woman from Beltangady working in a private medical store in the city was searching for a house on rent in June 2020. She came in contact with Pradeep, a broker from Kadri. He told here that a flat in the ground floor of a residential complex near K S Rao Road was available for lease. The woman saw the flat, agreed to take it on lease, and also to pay five lac rupees as deposit amount. On that occasion, she was told that Muhammed Ashraf was the owner of the flat, and five lac rupees was transferred to his account, after which agreement was signed by both the parties. The woman shifted her residence to that flat thereafter.
After three months, a person identified as Muhammed Ali visited her flat and sought rent payment of rent for three months. The woman told him about the lease agreement but the visitor said he was the owner of the flat. The woman came to know that fake documents were created to mislead her and a deposit was also taken from her fraudulently.
A case under sections 419, 420 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the accused. It is said that the accused have misled several innocent people in this way. Their modus operandi is to take vacant flats on rent, and then giving them on lease, duly collecting huge amounts as deposits. They earned monthly income by lending the deposit amount on monthly interest basis.
