Karnataka govt will approach SC on temple demolition matter, says Yediyurappa

Davanagere, Sep 19: Former chief minister Yediyurappa on Sunday September 19 said that the state government will approach the Supreme Court (SC) with regard to the matter related to the demolition of a temple in Mysuru.

Speaking at a BJP executive meeting in the city, Yediyurappa said, "There is a lot of confusion with regard to the temple demolition matter. It seems that the order of the Supreme Court is not right in this matter.

"The public is also against the SC in this matter. In the wake of this opposition, we will approach the SC for reconsideration of the verdict," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the deputy commissioners and other officials should not take any hasty decision with regard to demolition of temples.

A temple in a remote part of Mysuru district was demolished a few days ago, as part of an anti-encroachment drive in line with a 10-year-old Supreme Court order. The issue has created a political storm, with right-wing groups criticising the BJP-ruled government and accusing it of backstabbing the Hindus, and the Congress claiming that Hindu sentiments were hurt by the move.

    There maybe lakhs of structures built for Dhiva, Devatha, Naga and bootha in and around DK alone. Maybe some of them, may not have necessary legal documents. It is a matter of faith and there are people who paid visits from ages. Blanketly terming them as illegal and going for demolishion, is not the right thing to do. BJP Govt need to reconsider its decision. Yes, there are places where Naga bana's been destroyed, which is truly a place where naga's used to dwell and a structure is built by someone with a collection box for individual gains, such illegal structures have to go. It is important to differentiate between the two. BJP govt can not run away saying it is SC decision. Even Ram Temple is SC decision for that matter.

    There is an order of the Hon. Supreme Court that illegal religious places should be demolished. If this order is not followed it amounts to contempt of court and the concerned officer can be hauled up for contempt of court.
