Shirin's younger sister had visited the couple three weeks back. At that time, chicken was cooked. But Mubarak had chided his wife in the presence of her sister for failing to prepare the dish in a tasty manner. The fact that he derided her for her inability to cook good food had angered Shirin Banu. After her sister returned, the two had a fight on this issue.
Shirin, who had become angry about the said incident, had argued with her husband and shouted at him. The matter went beyond control after which Mubarak took up a stick and hit his wife hard. Shirin lost her life. Mubarak, who developed cold feet at this sudden development, had packed the body in a bed and thrown the same into the Chikkabanavara pond.
Shirin Banu's relatives who approached Mubarak about her disappearance, were given lame reasons by him. As he continued to do so, they threatened him at which Mubarak became fearful, and surrendered before the police, duly accompanied by an advocate. Soladevanahalli police who have registered the case, said that the body did not float even after many days as it was enveloped in bed. They have undertaken a search of the pond for the mortal remains.
