Bengaluru, Aug 23: In an incident reported from the city, a customer who bought a wine bottle online was fleeced of Rs 1.79 lac.
The person who was taken for a ride by the fraudsters happens to be an eighty year old retired officer. On August 19, he had ordered for a wine bottle through the Crystal Wines portal, Vibhutipura. Soon he received a call from a stranger who claimed himself to be Neelesh Choudhary, an employee of the wine shop. The official had ordered for a packet of cigarettes along with the wine bottle. The total bill was Rs 730. When the official opted to pay the bill through PayTM, Neelesh said the PayTM facility was not available, and suggested the official pay by using credit card.
The official concurred with the suggestion and provided credit card details. By using these details, the caller got Rs 99,860 and Rs 31,000 transferred to his account. Taken aback, the customer called Neelesh and confronted him. The fraudster said that he was drunk and had mistakenly pressed the wrong numbers and asked the caller to provide some other credit card number so that he can refund the excess money.
After the official provided another card number, Rs 19,190 and Rs 29,280 were additionally transferred in phases, before the caller disconnected. The retired official, who realized that he was taken for a ride, filed a complaint the officials stated. The case was registered in the central division CEN police station.
