Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 11: In the month of July many areas in the twin districts were flooded due to copious amounts of rain. However, the report from the weather department says that the total amount of rain received by both Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts so far is less than usual.
According to the statistics from June 1 to till date DK and Udupi districts have received 16.05 cm and 27.66 cm of rains respectively. The usual average for this period is 23.47 cm. So the districts of DK and Udupi have received less rain by 32% and 20% respectively.
In month-wise rain also the Monsoon is weak this time. In the month of June, in DK 6.36 cm of rain is received while the usual for this month is 9.27 cm. So there is a deficit of 31%. In Udupi, against the usual 11.05 cm of rain for the corresponding period, only 8.72% rain is received with a deficit of 21%.
According to the statistics of July, DK received only 8.80 cm against 12.32 cm, a deficit of 29% while Udupi received 11.99 cm against the usual 14.48 cm which means a shortage of 17%.
Out of the three coastal districts, only Uttara Kannada received proper amounts of Monsoon rains. Till date the usual average is 18.34 cm and the district has received 18.37 cm. in the month of June 7.31 cm of rain has fallen while the average is 6.91 cm. It means the district has received 6% more rain than usual. In the month of July the district has received 9.95 cm against the 9.93 cm average. Again an increase of a few cms.
According to C S Patil, scientist, Bengaluru meteorology department, monsoon is getting stronger in coastal districts and there is a possibility of rains in some areas. In the coming days, the rain will be average. More than usual rains cannot be expected.
