Margao, Sep 22: ‘Goa is known for peace and communal amity and occasions like Ganeshotsav celebrations help consolidate the bonds of unity, brotherhood and togetherness among people of different faiths”, said deputy speaker Mauvin Godinho highlighting the importance of festivals like Ganeshotsav.
He was speaking as a chief guest at the 37th anniversary celebration of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav of Shree Ganesh Sankhalya Saunsthan at Thana-Cortalim on Tuesday September 21.
Godinho said it was a good sign that the people of Goa have carried the tradition of celebrating Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav which was started by Lokmanya Tilak primarily to unite people against British rule. Now it is celebrated with joy and much fanfare.
Some of the senior citizens from Cortalim were felicitated by Godinho and other dignitaries. Students from Cortalim and Sancoale areas who have excelled in the last SSC examination were also honoured on the occasion.
Synthia D’ Silva and Aparna Naik, both ZP members, Anthonya Miranda, Sarpanch, Cortalim, Ramakant Borkar, Dy Sarpanch Sancoale, Bhoj Naik, Panchayat member and Gokuldas Amonkar, president of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal were present on the occasion. Devendra Kenkre, secretary of Mandal welcomed the gathering and Shirish Naik proposed the vote of thanks.
