Udupi, Sep 21: An awareness meet was held at Durgadevi Temple, Kunjarugiri, near here on Sunday September 19, in favour of the proposed anti-cow slaughter legislation.
Jalancharu Raghupati Tantri, treasurer, Govardanagiri Trust, Neelavara cow-shelter, near here, inaugurated the stage programme by worshipping a cow.
He said that the Moghul rulers had put in place conservation measures for livestock. “The Indian soldiers revolted against the Imperial forces since animal fat was used for greasing the guns”, said Tantri.
He urged the state administration to set up shelters for sick and aged cattle like the cow shelter set up by the Swami of Pejavar Mutt. “The number of cattle has been dwindling over the years and this has reduced the amount of organic manure. The extensive use of chemical fertilizers has deteriorated the fertility of the soil which is having consequences on the health of people”, added Tantri.
He further urged for people’s support in securing the approval of Indian President Pratibha Patil on the proposed bill on anti-cow slaughter.
MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary and Hindu Janajagrati Samiti member Ravindra Kamath were the chief guests.
Eleven significant decisions were taken at the meet and a copy of this will be presented to deputy commissioner Hemalata P on Tuesday September 21.
Ganesh Biliyar welcomed the gathering. Madwaraj and Gopalakrishna Bhat compered the programme. Prakash proposed the vote of thanks.
Hindu organizations held rituals and Bhajans at the temple from dawn to sunset on Sunday.
