Mangaluru: Areca nut, cocoa used in Holige - Prices spiral upward

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 21: The major commercial crop of coastal Karnataka, areca nut, and sub-crop cocoa, have been witnessing rise in prices. After they became part of value-added items, the farmers have hit the jackpot.

Srikrishna Shastri from Gurimoole, Puttur, who is a cook, has shown that it is possible to make tasty Holige (Obbattu) by using areca nut and cocoa. These uses are expected to get widespread demand for value-added items using these products all over the world in future. This is also a promising development for the crop and its growers.

Last year, Sudarshan Bedrady from Badiadka had made Laddoo from areca nuts. Later, another cook made Holige by using jackfruit, pineapple, carrot, dates, and fruits. After other uses, like chocolate, now cocoa Holige is having good demand in Karnataka and Kerala, says Srikrishna Shastri.

Cocoa Holige is prepared by making powder out of dried cocoa beans, and by adding rawa and sugar syrup. Old areca nut needs have to be ground with ghee before they are cooked and added to the Holige paste. Presently, cocoa Holige is sold at Rs 15 per piece while whole areca Holige costs Rs 22.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Today we are able to see people finding noble use of farm products as alternate to expensive commodities. A guy in Kerala found that jackfruit seeds powder is useful for diabetes. Raw banana powder is useful as alternate to wheat flour. Areca nuts and coco beans are consumable as food and are useful to prepare sweets. Why we should be allergic to our own things available around us. Our farmers get benefited locally due to such and also attracts educated youth in to farming.

Let the price araca nut pick higher on the demand and right use of the araca nuts are meant for and not mixing it in foods like holige which are even eaten by kids to olld people. Price promotion should not be at the cost peoples health unlike coconut producuts such as boumties and other chocolates.

That is good news for thousands of areca growers in this region. Agriculture in this regions can be a game changer for many .. Vegetables, fruit rice and other products grown in our regions has special taste which other regions in karnataka do not have .Please make use of this soil effectively ..I Know its challenging ,but use of technology and eco friendly machinery can play a good role in reducing the hardships faced by our farmers.

Areca nut in holige ? They are spoiling and destroying the real taste and flavour of original century old name of holige. Let them give any other name but preserve the generation old traditional tasty holige 🙏
