Mangaluru, Jul 21: Bakrid, which has a history of over 5,000 years and symbolises sacrifice and forgiveness, is celebrated today by the Muslim brethren. In the city, Bakrid is celebrated by offering prayers in mosques and exchanging greetings. One such prayer was held at the Idgah ground at Lighthouse Hill (Bavutagudda) where thousands participated in mass prayers.

Several devotees on Wednesday offered namaz on the feast amid stringent Covid protocols. Muslims around the world are observing Eid-al-Adha or what is known as the 'Feast of Sacrifice' from late Tuesday evening and on Wednesday and offering prayers at mosques in a staggered manner amid heavy safety protocols due to the viral disease outbreak.

The day is meant to celebrate the sacrifices made by Prophet Ibrahim who was even prepared to sacrifice his son as per the wishes of the Almighty. At the last minute, he got the message that he had passed all the tests of the divine and that he could sacrifice a goat instead of his son. The Prophet and his wife were advised to build prayer centre for the Almighty and this incident formed the base of Bakrid celebrations.

Muslims offer special prayers at mosques and Idgahs early in the morning. Animals are sacrificed to dente that the devotees are ready to sacrifice anything to satisfy the Almighty. Meat of the animals is then distributed among close ones and poor people.

@joseph, stop worrying about livestock when you can't stop eating fish, chicken (poultry) and also pork. Become a lifesaver (by not eating pork/chicken)this Christmas by eating vegetarian food this year.

Listen, my dear Indians......Let's all blame the Modi govt for supporting Kumbh Mela that had caused the second wave of covid-19 in India that had lost many innocent lives....But here, I am glad that my Muslim brothers are following the safety precautions at the best of what they can, if not perfectly...At least, Mask is worn properly, hygiene is maintained....Kumbh Mela was an extreme disaster....Gorakshak has been an extreme disaster since 2014.....God knows what's the next disaster....Who knows?? Probably, the upcoming UP election will bring the next wave of covid pandemic in India??? May god save us educated and innocent Indians of all faith from these illiterate morons...

Some pictures shows no masks and social distancing, it's totally not acceptable. What about minister's get together parties and other events, kumb mel gathering amidst corona peak stages, not seen any sort of outcry or condemnation on that. If you take a visit to markets , hardly you can see social distancing and masks.

Eid Mubarak to all... At least follow safety by wearing mask properly, celebration is important but not at the risk of life of self and others... Management Authorities/volunteers at the mosque should ensure that people follow COVID 19 protocols without deviation..

Many of you have commented on lack of social distancing and not using mask. Why target only these gatherings? It is the same pattern everywhere in and around us. People follow rules only in the presence of authorities if not business as usual.

They might have thought social distancing is keeping spouse, mother, sister at home. No social distancing at all. I thought only fifty people allowed.

Stringent protocols being followed is there for all to see. Social distancing NO, masks not there or worn over the chin and the crowd. All a big farce. A tight slap on all who follow the covid appropriate behaviour. VB politics!!!!!!!!!!

Maintaining social distance would be difficult, but atleast people can wear mask in a right. Good to see most of them wearing masks but holy place is at risk because of few ignorant people who are not wearing masks. Let's celebrate festivals without ignoring COVID norms.
