Bengaluru, Jul 20: "Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act is in force in the state. During Bakrid festival, cows too are often slaughtered. Therefore, the officials of the department have to maintain a close watch on the illegal trafficking of cows and beef from other states into Karnataka," said minister for animal husbandry, Prabhu Chauhan.

In a statement released by him, the minister said that normally the tradition of sacrificing animals during Bakrid festival and cows too is followed at times. As the law passed in the state has banned cow slaughter, we should ensure that cows are not killed. The police and district deputy commissioners have already been told to do the needful, he clarified.

Chauhan called upon the officials and the police department to maintain close vigil at the state borders. "If illegal cattle transportation is detected, the owners of the cows, cow protectors and the people have to convey information to the helpline of animal welfare, or complain to the nearest police station. In his release, he pleaded with the concerned not to take law into their hands.
